What is a Lifestyle Entrepreneur And How to Become One?

Millennials and the Gen-Z have a different attitude and relationship to money and business ownership. As a millennial writing this (Dom here by the way), I can honestly say that financial freedom, being a lifestyle entrepreneur and my view on it differs greatly to my moms. My moms focus growing up was about job satisfaction, business being a risk, having a good pension, owning a property and a good healthcare plan.

My thought process was that jobs and single source of income was a risk, experiences, location freedom and making passive income was the end goal. I realized I wasn’t the only one of my friends who felt this way. I asked my friends in a WhatsApp group about their views on entrepreneurship, lifestyle entrepreneurship and financial freedom and the responses were similar to mine.

One of my friends actually said he bought a Monopoly board game called “Monopoly for Millennials.” Long story short, he ended up sending a long voice note (which felt like a podcast btw lol) which explained that the players are encouraged to collect experiences, like a week of meditation and travel to Thailand as opposed to collecting property.

When I listened to the full voice, it really hit home that our generation is just different and the dream for many is actually lifestyle entrepreneurship. Which brought me to writing this blog about lifestyle business owners and the ideal life of making money and getting the privilege to have money and location freedom combined.

So let’s get into it…

What is A Lifestyle Entrepreneur?

A lifestyle entrepreneur is a term used to describe someone who starts a business primarily to support their desired lifestyle, rather than to achieve financial gain or business growth solely. This type of entrepreneur prioritises flexibility, creativity, and control over their time and work, and often values work-life balance, experiences, travel, location independence over being restricted to one sole location.

A lifestyle business may be self-sustaining, generating enough income to support the founder’s desired lifestyle, but is not typically designed to scale or pursue aggressive growth. Some examples of lifestyle businesses include consultants, coaches, course creators, writers, photographers, blog owners, e-commerce brands who sell products that align with their personal interests and values. 2. Conduct market research: Once you have a general idea of what kind of business you would like to start, conduct market research to determine if there is a demand for your product or service. Look at the competition and see what they are offering, and assess what unique value you can bring to the market.
  3. Develop a business plan: Create a business plan that outlines your goals, strategies, and how you plan to make money. This will help you stay focused and organized as you move forward.
  4. Test your idea: Before launching your business, consider testing your idea through a small-scale pilot or a minimum viable product (MVP) to validate your concept and refine your offerings.
  5. Build your network: Networking is key in any business, and this is especially true for lifestyle businesses. Build a network of people who can provide support, advice, and referrals.
  6. Launch your business: Once you have a solid plan in place, it’s time to launch your business. Start small and be prepared to adjust your approach as you learn more about your market and your customers.
